Chapter 1-3 (pages 3-18)

I read this book when I was a kid and absolutely loved it. I went on to reading many other books by Louis Sachar, but barely remember them. It's cool that I get this chance in college to revisit the book; it's just as cute as I remember.

I really like Bradley's personality, especially his collection of little toy animals. His family is hilarious. I think one thing I really liked about the book when I read it as a kid was the way his teacher , Mrs. Ebbel, treats him. I remember having a few teachers that acted much like her towards the "class clowns." I wasn't one of them, of course...

I find Mrs. Ebbel appalling. That's one lesson I learned. Teachers have to treat all kids with respect. The students will follow your lead. If you are contemptuous of a student, they will be doubly so. If you act loving and patient, they are much more likely to as well. There are some pretty annoying kids out there, but no need to make their lives even more miserable.
